The Pomodoro Method

Okay, friends, let's talk about something that saved my life when I was trying to juggle running RSG Sales while being chief homework helper and sports mom to the stars 🙂. The Pomodoro Method.

What the Heck is a Pomodoro?

First things first - no, it's not a fancy pasta sauce but it definitely sounds like it! Maybe with a glass of chianti? I digress…The Pomodoro Method is basically working in focused 25-minute sprints followed by short breaks. That's it. No complicated apps, no expensive planners, just you and a timer.

Why This Actually Works for Parent Entrepreneurs or Any Entrepreneur

I was the queen of having 47 browser tabs open while simultaneously responding to emails, working on client projects, and "listening" to my kid's story about something that happened in class.

The Pomodoro Method literally forced me to close those tabs (both mentally and literally) and focus on ONE thing for just 25 minutes. And y'all, the results were kind of mind-blowing.

Here's why it's perfect for us parent entrepreneurs:

1. It Works With Our Chaos

  • Got 25 minutes between school drop-off and your first call? That's one Pomodoro

  • Kid's sports practice? Perfect time for two Pomodoros

  • Waiting at the dentist? Boom - squeeze in a Pomodoro

2. It's Actually Doable

  • Anyone can focus for 25 minutes (I promise!)

  • The breaks prevent burnout

  • You don't need to reorganize your entire life

3. It Helps With Decision Fatigue

  • No more wondering what to work on next

  • Each Pomodoro has ONE focus

  • Less mental energy wasted on task-switching

How to Make It Work in Real Life

Here's my no-BS guide to implementing the Pomodoro Method when you're running a business and a household:

Step 1: Pick Your Focus Time

The traditional method says 25 minutes, but let's be real - you might need to adjust. I found that to be just right for me. However, you can adjust the timing to 35 minutes if it takes you a few minutes to really get in the zone. Find what works for you.

Step 2: Choose Your Break Length

Standard breaks are 5 minutes, with a longer 15-30 minute break after four Pomodoros. But guess what? You can totally adjust this too. Sometimes my "break" was driving to school pickup, and that's okay!

Step 3: Pick Your Tool

Options I've actually used and love:

  • Regular phone timer (free and already in your pocket)

  • Old fashion dial kitchen timer

  • Siri or Alexa!
